Our Mission

The Florida Institute for Saltwater Heritage (FISH) is a non-profit, grassroots organization established in 1991. We are dedicated to the promotion, education and preservation of  Cortez and Florida’s commercial fishing and other traditional maritime cultures including  the environment upon which these communities depend.

Our Programs

Commercial Fishing Festival
Boatworks Cortez

FISH Preserve

100+ acres of land adjacent to the fishing village of Cortez was purchased through a grassroots, community effort led by FISH. This parcel of land is known as the “FISH Preserve” and it is one of the only undeveloped pieces of land left on Sarasota Bay. FISH has been working with partners to restore this property for the future.

The Festival

All proceeds of the Cortez Commercial Fishing Festival support the FISH mission. This two-day event celebrates our fishing heritage with live music, nautical arts & crafts, children’s activities, environmental exhibits, delicious seafood, and, of course, cold beer! Our annual Festival happens during the 3rd weekend of February.

Boatworks

The FISH Boatworks offers boatbuilding, restoration, and repair services. Volunteers whose skill levels run from professionals to enthusiastic amateurs get to work together to restore and repair boats. Contact us today if you would like to volunteer with us or rent a space to repair your own boat.
